news and eventslts asks: just what do teachers need?A generous grant from The Krembil Foundation
allows Let's Talk Science to understand the current and projected needs
of teachers in Canada.
LTS
is committed to catalyzing systemic change in science education across
Canada. Over the past few years, a growing number of
organizations have begun to offer classroom workshops. Therefore, LTS
has made the strategic decision to discontinue delivery of our in-class
workshops, although they have been very well received for over 10 years
in BC, Alberta and Ontario. Our growing Partnership Program
continues to engage qualified science and technology volunteers in
classrooms across the country to support teachers and engage students.
As
the face of science and technology changes and grows exponentially , so
do the needs of teachers to ensure they can bring this world into the
classroom. We are delighted to announce a grant from The Krembil
Foundation that will allow us to understand the current and projected
needs of teachers so that we can develop new programs and services to
meet their changing needs. What we learn from this project will provide
a sound basis for our next unique and innovative program.
Stay tuned!
team girl squad are the 2006 mcmaster all science challenge champions! After a tough elimination round at the All Science Challenge at
McMaster University on Friday, May 26th, an all girls team from
Westview Elementary School comes out victorious. Hamilton-Wentworth area came to the McMaster University campus on
a rainy Friday afternoon to compete in the 2nd Annual All Science
Challenge. The trivia-style competition quizzed student’s knowledge of
science facts that they had studied in 127 page All Science Challenge
handbook written by Let’s Talk Science volunteers from McMaster
University, University of Toronto, McGill University, and the
University of British Columbia.
Team Girl Squad - the All Science Champions!
The event was founded and was organized by McMaster student
volunteers involved in the Let’s Talk Science Partnership Program. 30
volunteers and 7 committee members made the day run smoothly as
chaperones, question readers (like Alex Trebek on Jeopardy!), judges,
timekeepers and all those other ‘behind the scenes’ jobs.
20 teams were separated into 4 colour-coded rooms to compete in
the Points Rounds. These rounds saw them working as teams and then
supporting their classmates during the individual question period. And
boy were those questions tough!
After a full afternoon of mind-bending science questions, 5 teams
had amassed enough points to progress to the Elimination Round. This
round was judged by professors and PhD candidates in the fields of
Psychology, Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics and Statistics, Physics and
Astronomy, Earth and Environmental Sciences, Engineering In the first of the final rounds, the Corrugated Chipmunks and
the Newton Group were eliminated. Then in the second round of
questions, Team Pine Cones, Fabulous Female Forces, and Team Girl Squad
were all tied with equal numbers of questions correct. After a
tense tie breaker round Fabulous Female Forces were eliminated and
became the 3rd place winners. After only two questions, Team Pine Cones
was quickly eliminated, making Team Girl Squad the All Science
Challenge Champions!
The top five teams that advanced to the final rounds were:
Team Girl Squad, Westview School (220 points)
Team Pine Cones, Westview School (210 points) Fabulous Female Forces, St. Augustine (200 points) Newton Group, St. Bernadette (200 points) Corrugated Chipmunks, Westview School (200 points) The All Science Challenge Champions and the 2nd and 3rd
place teams all went home with great prizes generously donated by
Germain Electronic Limited including CD players and MP3/MP4 players.
Several spectators, teachers and other participants also went home with
prizes donated by local businesses including gift certificates,
backpacks and a McMaster sweatshirt.
This fun and educational event has grown out of the Partnership
Program’s goal of getting young students excited about learning
science. In the 2005-2006 academic year, over 100 McMaster University
Let’s Talk Science Partnership Program volunteers reached over 2,000
students in the Hamilton-Wentworth region through classroom visits and
demonstrations and they were able to reach over 100 more through the
All Science Challenge!
