Tomatosphere™

Tomatosphere TM

Let’s Talk Science is part of the consortium of sponsors offering Tomatosphere™, a unique classroom project that uses the excitement of space exploration as a context for teaching students the skills and processes of science experimentation and inquiry. In 2014 alone, over 17,000 classrooms took part in Tomatosphere™ activities.

What exactly is Tomatosphere™ ?

Tomatosphere TMA free program, Tomatosphere™ is offered annually to K to 12 classrooms across Canada. Each spring, students investigate the effects of the space environment on the growth of food that will inevitably support long-term human space travel.

Tomato seeds, both treated and untreated, are provided along with educator resources and classroom materials. Students and teachers will not know which of their seeds have been in space or if they’ve been treated or untreated until the germination process is complete and results are submitted. (Some seeds will have undergone treatments that simulate the extreme conditions of interplanetary travel).

This classroom activity supports the skills of questioning, observing, comparing, contrasting and analyzing data. If you’d like your students to have an “out of this world” STEM learning experience, Tomatosphere™ is just the program for you!
